This author is not so old, in fact he's only 23, well,
almost 24. And yet he is already hearing himself say "I
never thought I'd see the day." It is not something he
wants to hear uttered from his own lips but that is the
case today when he learned of the Cell Phone Novel. That's
correct, it is the first literary genre to come out of the
cellular age. Frankly, it is quite mind-boggling. Things
like Unlocked GSM Cell Phones and Apple Cell Phones iPhone
is crazy enough. But this, this is nuts!
In 2003 the first Cell Phone Novel was published by an
author under the name "Yoshi." "Yoshi" is a Japanese native
from Tokyo and this first story was titled "Deep Love."
It's the story of a teenager doing subsidized dating and
ends up contracting AIDS. But the plot is neither here nor
there, what matters is what entails a Cell Phone Novel.
The sentences are short and often in the form of dialogues.
The spacing can depict the mood of the story. For example,
in a tense moment the words will be squeezed together and
cramped whereas an easy flowing poem about the natural
world may be more spaced out. The chapters are typically
sent individually, after the book has been downloaded, with
each one being between 70 - 100 characters. The most common
topics are of anything related to love and are usually
targeted towards teens. When you take out your Unlocked GSM
Cell Phones or Apple Cell Phones are you interested in a
"novel?"
Originating in Japan, Mobile Phone Novels have spread
throughout the world with a huge fan base in China. They
are so popular in their native country, Japan that in 2007
five of the ten bestselling novels were originally Cell
Phone Novels.
Currently the main writers of Cell Phone Novels are
university students who are engaged in pop culture and
trends and understand what the younger, teen audience
wants. Like video games, Cell Phone Novels put the reader
into a first person point of view for the story.
Furthermore, they are as write on the move as they are to
read. And thus they are changing reading altogether. Like
the ebook these little suckers are a mobile convenience
that ultimately saves time. But with Apple Cell Phones
iPhone and other smart phones, can this really be a lasting
idea?
And what are we really looking at here? It may be fun to
have a Cell Phone Novel to read out of sheer boredom but
are they really going to push people away from the book
which we are accustomed to? That seems far-fetched but they
can influence a generation in either a good way or a bad
way and as of now it remains to be seen which way it will
sway. After all, reading on Unlocked GSM Cell Phones isn't
the worst thing in the world.
